A Seed was Planted
At Scheeringa Farms, we have a history that’s as rich as the soil we plant in.
The process of growing our hanging baskets and bedding plants also improved. Starting in 1990, five wood-framed greenhouses heated by wood-burning stoves and portable propane heaters were replaced, adding a new commercial greenhouse every other year. We completed the project in 2014 with our current, state-of-the-art 30,000 sq. ft. all-under-glass showroom greenhouse. It includes automatic watering and venting systems and heating units, with all selling space indoors for easy access to our plants by our customers.
In 1940,
the family moved to a farmhouse on Cline Avenue in Highland, Indiana (the present day farmhouse), where Bill continued to farm and peddle until 1967. That year, with the help of son Don and daughter Loretta, they opened “The Farm Stand”, a simple trailer full of produce for sale in front of the farmhouse.
Farmer Bill died in 1987 and today, the farm is run by Farmer Don and his three daughters Jeannine, Jennifer and Janille – the 3rd generation of the Scheeringa family. Though we still tend to our plants with the same personal care as Farmer Bill, we’ve made a lot of positive changes in the years since 1967.
The Farmstand,
moved from the front yard, and expanded and flourished into a permanent open-air market where a wide assortment of produce is picked fresh daily. Every year we work with the same family business in Michigan to bring our customers the best Michigan peaches, apples and honey crisp apple cider, when in season. We also offer homegrown local honey and a wide variety of salad dressings, marinades and sauces that people go crazy for.
The Legacy Continues

In 2004, we erected a 4200 sq. ft. packing facility to enable us to sell wholesale produce to many restaurants and grocery stores in Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland. This facility includes a temperature controlled room and provides the space to grade and professionally package a large volume of vegetables, such as a wide assortment of peppers, heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, pickles, zucchini, yellow squash, red tomatoes and many other unique items.
